Topooco ( b. 1944 ), Qolla artist and writer relocated from the Andean plateau to Sweden in 1970.
Emerging from the experience of migration, his work focus on traditional Qolla customs and everyday life while addressing themes of cultural continuity, disruption and emancipation.
Through rural landscapes, indigenous scenes, and mythological narratives, Topooco examines the tensions between ancestral memory and the displacement caused by centuries of stagnation under Spanish colonial rule and its descendants, critiquing the destructive forces that have sought to suppress a revival of Qolla culture and way of life.
